about

I
Mezentius is an ally of Turnus who is an exiled Etruscan king as well as a scorner of the gods. Mezentius has a single son, Lausus who engages in combat with the young Arcadian Pallas. During battle with Aeneas, Mezentius is wounded by a spear throw to the thigh and Aeneas's killing blow is blocked at the last moment by Lausus. Mezentius is carried off the battlefield by his men to recover under a tree on the banks of the river. Saving his father's life has cost him his own, and Lausus is killed by the greater warrior Aeneas. A dead Lausus is carried back to Mezentius and he begins to mourn the death of his son.

II, III
Mezentius is enraged at the death of Lausus and vows to kill Aeneas. He calls his men to bring him his horse and he rides, injured, back towards the battle in search of Aeneas. Mezentius feels guilt that his son died by interfering in his fight with Aeneas. He has accepted his fate of death and only seeks revenge. He finds Aeneas and proceeds to throw his spears from horseback but they merely bounce off of Aeneas's Hephaestian shield. Fed up with Mezentius on horseback, Aeneas throws a single spear and hits Mezentius's horse right between the eyes, killing it and pinning Mezentius underneath. Aeneas throws taunts and barbs his way but Mezentius is having none of it. "Kill me and be done with it" he essentially says, requesting only that his body be treated with the same respect Aeneas showed Lausus's so that they may be buried together. Aeneas kills Mezentius.

lyrics

I
Sons bury their fathers, not the other way around
Took his death with honor, shielded from that killing blow
I watched him sink his spirit falter

Oh is there anybody up there? Can anybody see?
Oh is there anybody up there, to have so forsaken me?

Swords swung swiftly through this air,
That certain ring of bronze, makes all battles stop to watch and listen.
Why such rush such haste towards death, and he bravely fought, but fought not enough.

Oh is there anybody up there? Can anybody see?
Oh is there anybody up there, to have so forsaken me?

They say that each life comes with a chance to repent.
A chance to make up for sins that they did commit.
Brave Aeneas how I'm going to ride you down.

Oh is there anybody up there?

II
There's blood in my eyes but I've never seen clearer
My purpose is vengeful straight forward and true
Aeneas the Trojan with his empire near and Mezentius the exile with nothing to lose.
So I'll add one more body, a king to my count, but my leg is just holds me so bring me my mount.
Regrets I have many, specifically one, that a father's debts they were paid by his son.

I cant say is this the end? Oh I couldn't care.

Aeneas! Aeneas! AENEAS I CRY!
Do you think you can beat us, a man and his horse?
Encircling, encircling, my spears they take flight
merely denting his shield, they were thrown with such force.
I have no expectations of glory or praise.
Furthermore i would gladly dig out my own grave.
All it takes for a victory a win in this fight,
is him equally dead in the dirt by my side.

I cant say is this the end? Oh I couldn't care.

A lightning bolt it leaves his hand.
The thunder clap hits right between the eyes.
A rider has fallen down to earth, and I know,
I know.
Why mock and threaten me with death?
There is no sin here to commit.
A solitary last request.
Bury me with my own.

III
Why Mock and threaten me with death?
There is no sin here to commit.
A solitary last request.
Bury me with my own.
Why Mock and threaten me with death?
There is no sin here to commit.
A solitary last request.
Bury me right next to.

LAUSUS.
